Elementary Education Resources

Elementary school is an important part of a child’s life. It’s when they learn many basics skills, including how to speak properly, how to read and write, and how to work with numbers. They learn how to play sports and draw and play instruments. In elementary school, kids get their start, which is why it’s so important for them to get the best level of education. Here are some resources to help teachers and parents of elementary kids.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is where the base for a child’s education is established. In kindergarten, children are taught letters and numbers so they can identify them. They learn that words are read from the left side of the page to the right. Kindergarten kids are taught the difference between upper case and lower case words and they are taught syllables. They learn to print their own name as well.

First Grade

In first grade, students learn proper pronunciation and letter patterns. They are taught how to read common words and respond to simple questions in relation to their reading. First grade students can identify syllables in words, expanding into simple sentence construction. They are taught the numbers up to 100 as well as addition and subtraction. First graders can also decipher simple graphs and charts.

Second Grade

In second grade, students are taught how to recognize spelling patterns and decode words with multiple syllables. They are taught to recognize abbreviations and how to use both regular and irregular plurals. At this stage, they are usually able to read with fluency and accuracy. Most second graders should be able to use commas and quotation marks correctly. They are taught the numbers up to 1,000 and are able to understand the inverse reaction between addition and subtraction. They can add and subtract using money, estimate answers, and they can collect number data and analyze it.

Third Grade

Third graders are able to use complex words and decode unfamiliar words. They can self-correct when they make an error and they can use the context in a sentence or word to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Third grade students can create paragraphs and use punctuation. This is also the year kids are taught multiplication and division. They should be able to count up to 10,000 and they can do addition and subtraction with ease. This is the time that they will begin working with fractions.

Fourth Grade

Fourth graders are able to use derivations, synonyms, antonyms, and idioms to help them determine a word’s meaning. They are taught to identify patterns in stories and evaluate new ideas by testing them against old information and ideas. Fourth grade students also learn to compose multiple paragraphs that fit together. They learn numbers up to one million and learn how to factor small numbers. At this stage, they should be able to divide a number with multiple digits by a single digit.

Fifth Grade

Fifth graders are taught to identify conflicts in stories and identify the characteristics of stories. They can identify the meanings of literary devices and patterns. They are taught to contrast actions, motives, and appearances in characters. Fifth grade students are taught to work with both very large and very small numbers, going into percentages and prime numbers.

Sixth Grade

This is the grade where many children begin learning a second language such as Spanish, or French, which usually coincides with learning more about the origins of the English language.

Music

Music is very important in a child’s life. It gives them a way to express themselves. In elementary school, children will often have some sort of music class where they are taught the basics. By learning and performing some songs for their school, students are exposed to the wonderful possibilities of music. Many students also begin playing an instrument at this time.

Language Arts

Language is extremely important in a child’s life. Everybody uses language to communicate with the world and learn. Language arts include grammar, spelling, pronunciation, and the written word.

Art

Art is a great way for children to learn to express themselves and interact with the world around them. Using art supplies, kids can create entirely new worlds based on their own imaginations. It’s why art classes are so important for younger kids, and why it’s good for elementary kids to learn how to paint, color, and construct projects in school.

Physical Education

Every student needs to get physical exercise, which is where P.E. comes in. Kids learn how to play sports and perform other sporting activities. They play games that help them improve coordination and learn teamwork. Most of all, they learn how to keep their body healthy. They even learn how to eat right in some cases.
