Master of Education, Online Learning
There is no distinction between students who earn their Master of Science in Education on campus or online from the University of New England. Regardless of the method of course delivery, the degree is exactly the same. Some may worry whether they have the skills to complete an online degree, but for the most part, online learning is comparable to traditional on-campus education. The difference is in the delivery method, which allows online students constant access to their courses so that they can fit their studies into their schedule. Online courses have the added advantage of working with peer professionals from across the nation.
Like most on campus programs, online courses will require students to utilize textbooks that will be part of the instruction for each course. But, instead of driving to the campus, students are free to work from anywhere they can access a computer and the Internet, meaning the whole world potentially becomes their your classroom. All lectures are available on the course website. All classwork (homework, writing assignments and exams) is completed and submitted online. Each week students can log in and view a weekly course syllabus to help keep pace with class studies.
Please note: Most of the coursework is done according to your own schedule, although there may be occasional opportunities for live sessions, as a chance for students to engage with the professor. As an example, course EDU 705 (Leadership, Professional Responsibilities & Ethics) requires participation in a number of live web conference sessions, conducted in the evenings.
Online students have the power to fit education into their calendar. Many students find flexible solutions to time management. Instead of going out to lunch, many students take their lunch at their computer to complete reading assignments. Students with children often wake up early or work late after their children are asleep to complete their schoolwork.
While you will not have to visit the University of New England campus to complete your studies, as an online student you still have tremendous levels of support from the university, so you always feel connected. You will never be alone. If you have any problems, just contact your Program Manager or Instructor for support. Many students who have finished the program actually feel they lead more support in the online environment than they had in an on-campus program.
While support from the faculty and staff is a big help, possibly your biggest form of support will come from classmates, many of whom become lifelong friends after their online learning experience. When you come to the end of your Master of Education online program, we invite you to attend graduation ceremonies on campus and meet the peers you have had so many great discussions with online.
In this video, Tracy, a Graduate of UNEs MSEd program discusses her experience and why she would recommend this program to other teachers like herself.

- Q: What motivated you to get your degree?A: Our school was in need of a leader. It was a brand new program that was just started and they felt that we could run without having a leader. And I needed to take the lead. So, I felt that it was necessary for me to have the requirements necessary to be a good leader in our school.Q: What made you choose UNE?
A: The easiness of being able to work on my own time. I’m a mother of two little girls and I was able to work full time, still be a part of my family, be home every night with them, do homework with my daughter so that she can see that learning doesn’t just happen at one time; it’s a lifelong journey.
Q: What did it feel like to participate in an online program?
A: It felt great. I’ve met so many great people, wonderful professors who are right there to help us. I’ve built up some great resources in other states, learned about so many different techniques that I could have never learned just being in a one room classroom. Your overview of everything across the United States was a wonderful opportunity.
Q: What was the biggest challenge for you?
A: Deadlines. Even though the professors were very easy going about “if you’re having a tough week, let them know, they’ll help you out”. Just making sure all my papers were in when they needed to be was my biggest challenge.
Q: If another student was considering UNE and asked you “why should they choose UNE”, what would you say?
A: I’d say do it in a heartbeat. I felt like I learned more now than I could have ever, even in my undergraduate work. I felt I learned so much because I needed to teach myself and be able to participate in class. Whereas, sitting in a classroom, you can just sit back and be there.
Q: What was the best thing about your online program?
A: The friends I’ve met, the knowledge I’ve learned. It has been a wonderful opportunity. Even to be able to still go to school and be a parent was just a great opportunity I would never have given up.

Do you accept international students for the online program? What are the requirements for a student whose English is not a native language, who has a foreign Bachelor degree, who is not living in the States? Thank you very much and looking forward to hearing from you.

Huyen Phan,
We do accept foreign students so long as you have a passing score on your TOEFL Exam and you will need to have your transcripts evaluated. Ask your enrollment advisor for further details.

Hello,
I work at an international school and my school supports us in getting a Masters degree through Buffalo State. I’m already enrolled in that program, but would like to take one of your literacy classes, particularly the one focused on Reading with Writing. Is it possible to take a class as a non-degree seeking student? When would that class be offered, what would the cost be, and how can I enroll?
Thanks in advance
