What should I look for in a distance education degree program?

The strongest distance education programs are those with proven track records, experience low student attrition rates, receive consistently high student satisfaction scores and require minimal travel. The University of New England has all of these important attributes. Its e-learning expertise has been successfully demonstrated through its Masters in Education Online program.

How much does the program cost?

Course tuition for the MSEd and CAGS programs can be found on the Tuition Costs page. The University of New England’s education masters degree program offers online students the same outstanding education that campus-based students receive. Easy access to affordable education helps us fulfill our goal of ensuring that every individual who has the desire to further their education has the opportunity to do so. How long will it take to earn my MSEd?

The online Master of Science in Education program may be completed in less than 2 years (anywhere between 18-24 months). Some of the CAGS programs can be completed in 9 months.

Is this program accredited?

Yes. The University of New England is regionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc., which accredits schools and colleges in the six New England states. Accreditation by the Association indicates that the institution has been carefully evaluated and found to meet standards agreed upon by qualified educators.

Why is regional accreditation important?

Regional accreditation is the primary type of institutional accreditation recognized in the United States. Some institutions with online programs hold national accreditation because they are unwilling or unable to meet the rigorous standards of regional accreditation. You should also know that many educational institutions holding regional accreditation do not recognize credits or degrees earned at institutions that are nationally accredited. This is very important if you plan on transferring from one college or university to another part way through a degree program, or if you plan to pursue additional degrees at different colleges or universities.

Is UNE new to online education?
No, the University of New England has over ten years of experience in distance education learning. UNE started a distance learning program many years ago with the MSEd program. At that time it was a video-based program. It was in 1997 that UNE began offering the CAGS program online.

Is online learning for me?
Students who graduate from the University of New England’s online MSEd program receive the exact same degree as students who attend classes on our campus. The diploma does not distinguish if you were an online student or a traditional campus-based student. The degree you earn is exactly the same. In fact, we strongly encourage you to attend your graduation ceremony to celebrate your accomplishments.

Online learning is ideal for working professionals because it provides the opportunity to study when it is convenient for you. The flexibility this program offers makes it possible for even the busiest individuals to earn their degree. Add to that, the many levels of unprecedented support that you will receive throughout the program and it is easy to see that this may be just the educational model you have been looking for.

I am not computer savvy; can I do this?
Yes. We realize that many students are computer novices, so the University of New England provides special support to new students during an extensive orientation to online courses prior to starting classes.

I have an extremely busy work and family life and cannot attend classes each week. Is this program for me?
Yes. You can complete your studies at your convenience in the comfort of your own home. No campus visits are required. You will have access to your coursework 24 hours a day, which can be completed around your busy schedule.

Do I have to log on at specified times to attend/listen to class sessions?
Most of the coursework is done according to your own schedule, although there may be occasional opportunities for live sessions, as a chance for students to engage with the professor. As an example, course EDU 705 (Leadership, Professional Responsibilities & Ethics) requires participation in a number of live web conference sessions, conducted in the evenings.

How many hours per week will I need to study?
On an average, most students spend 15-20 hours per week studying to ensure completion of six credits each semester. However, this can vary greatly, depending on your personal and professional circumstances.

What are the computer requirements for participation in the program?
To participate in the online Master of Science in Education program, you will need a computer system with current specifications. Please visit the computer requirements page or contact your Enrollment Advisor for specific details.

I currently have a permanent certification for NY State in School District Administration (SDA), which required an internship from the college in which I was enrolled. If I took the CAS Program Educational Leadership, Ethics and Change program at UNE could I transfer the Internship I took into UNE for Internship I???

University of New England Admissions - October 12th, 2010 at 07:05pm

    Jemell,
To maintain academic integrity of out Masters and post-masters programs, UNE does not accept any transfer credits into out programs. Also, check with the state of NY for out of state approval for administration certification.

How many semesters does the ONLINE programs have? Are all courses available every given semester? How do you evaluate the students’ progress in these programs? Are you using any particular instructional learning model for ONLINE students? I’m more curious about the Reading & Writing (MSED)Program. Thank you much, Anonymous.

    Brian Tata - May 13th, 2011 at 08:12am

I completed an internship in administration which led to my Mass. DESE Certification as a Principal/Assistant. Would you accept this internship as transfer credit for the last portion of the program?

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - May 13th, 2011 at 06:57pm

Brian, to maintain the integrity of the program, we cannot accept transfer credits. You may find that programs accepting transfer credits will be lengthier than UNE’s programs.

What is the difference btn the CAGs in Educational Leadership and the Masters in Educational Leadership. What courses count for both? What additinal courses are needed for the Masters in Educational Leadership?

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - May 27th, 2011 at 03:12pm

The CAGS programs are for educators, who already have a Masters degree. Students in the MSEd program take 5 core courses and 5 courses in the area of their concentration.

    Brenda - June 23rd, 2011 at 05:36am

I am interested in the M. Ed. in Educational Leadership.

I hold a teacher’s license from Colorado for K-8. I received certification after completing Colorado’s Alternative Teacher Licensing Program (ATLP). (I had already completed a BA from U of IA and an MBA from U of IL.) I taught for 3 years in U.S. public schools and have been teaching overseas for 4 years.

Is my teacher certification sufficient for applying to the M.Ed. program? Maine Dept of Ed has told me I am not required to have teacher certification in Maine to obtain principal certification. Thank you.

University of New England Enrollment Advisors - June 30th, 2011 at 03:30pm

Brenda, for teachers or administrators that do not hold a teaching certification/licensure, your enrollment advisor can advise you on alternative documentation when applying for the MSEd or CAGS program.
